Dr. Michael W. Ridenhour lives in the city in which he was born, Roanoke Virginia. He attended Oakland Elementary and Lee Junior High there and graduated with honors from William Fleming Senior High. He graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelors degree in English, but not before serving four years in the United States Air Force. He married his wife Marcia in 1967 and they have three children and three grandchildren. He is a member of First Presbyterian Church and sings in the choir.

He is a member of the Roanoke Kiwanis Club and a former barbershop quartet member. His avocations are diverse and range from writing book reviews for the Roanoke Times, to acting in and directing local theater productions, coaching little league soccer and Middle School basketball, to dressing as Sam I Am for reading Dr. Seuss books to inner city children. He plays tennis several times a week and attempts to golf with his father in law on Fridays. He is an avid amateur astronomer and rides a mountain bike when he can find time. He took care of his Dad until his death in the Fall of 2002. As a result of his relationship with his father, he has a great affection for senior citizens and often says that they are far more interesting people than his contemporaries.

Dr. Ridenhour feels that it is important for professional people to use their knowledge and skills in service to the communities in which they live.
